Paying for Software?

Are you still running Windows? Why not try an entirely free, open, fast, slick and reliable operating system instead?

Ubuntu

Are you still running Internet Explorer? Why not try a free, fast browser that works, with more features than you could shake a hundred sticks at?

Firefox 3

Are you still running Microsoft Office? Why not try a free office suite that looks like and is compatible with Office, but without all the bloat and unusable gimmicks?

The Tagline For AcePCs
28th June 2008

I've come up with a tagline for the website. It took a long, concerted, convoluted half minute, but I think it was worth it.

Welcome to AcePCs - "Impartially Linux".

The Short Term Plan
20th June 2008

The short term plan for Ace PCs: a comments feature (news and KB), lots of CSS work, a CMS system, lots of content addition, and CSS hacks to support IE (maybe... eventually...). A more complex, integrated system will be rolled out over time.

Why don't I care that much about IE, even though it represents most browsers in use today? It isn't even close to being standards compliant, it's incredibly tightly integrated into Windows, it chews system resources, it looks awful, it hasn't got (m)any features, and all the while there's the superb Firefox to use instead.

Recently completed: some of the basic stylesheets, basic news code, basic KB code, and some (very limited!) content.

Site's Going Up

To mark Firefox Download Day (a day or two ago... but heck) I'm beginning to get this site into a better shape. Watch this space!

Firefox Download Day
18th June 2008

Following a lot of waiting, and a lot of well-deserved hype, Mozilla has finally released their newest version of Firefox to the waiting millions. In an attempt to create a world record for most downloads in 24 hours, Mozilla racked up over 8 million Firefox downloads, all the while allowing geeks with little better to do to overanalyse a slick, live, world map of downloads. It looks likely that they'll not only make the record books, but also gain in browser share against IE.
